What is a pocket-sprung mattress?
A pocket-sprung mattress uses springs housed in individual fabric pockets rather than one interconnected wire unit. Each spring can compress on its own, so the mattress responds to the shape and weight of the body above it in more detail.
Because the springs move independently, pocket-sprung designs can also reduce how much movement travels across the bed compared with an interconnected spring unit.
Above the springs sits the comfort layer, which can be foam, latex, wool, cotton or a combination. That layer determines much of how the mattress feels, so two mattresses with the same spring count can sleep very differently.
Does spring count actually matter?
Spring count is the number most often quoted in marketing, but it is only meaningful alongside spring height, wire gauge, how the springs are arranged and what sits above them.
Very high counts are usually achieved by adding a layer of shorter mini springs beneath or above the main unit. That can add finer surface response, but it is a different thing from a deeper full-height spring unit.
